Results Management Leadership in the AI Age

6-month cohort for program leaders

As you plan your journey and develop a rollout plan, you’ll want to assess the friction points in your current operating rhythm, draft a business value roadmap and OKRs for OKRs with your executive sponsor, anchor on best practices, consider your overall scope, chat with a coach, and hear other organizations’ launch insights.

“When I think about scaling OKRs out to thousands of employees... we couldn't do it without a tool."

— Anna Birch, Chief of Staff, Cisco Security Business Group

As you plan to improve strategy alignment and execution, develop an intentional roadmap with your executive sponsor that defines stages and value achievement. Your approach should help the organization drive better outcomes, not just create another document or reporting exercise. Setting OKRs alone rarely produces great results – use them to align on outcomes and bring them into the operating cadence to create high focus.

Implementing OKRs for strategy execution without a system is a little like implementing CRM and forecast calls without a platform – you can do it, but it will be plagued by bad data, bad facts, bloated meetings, and reporting scrambles that undermine the execution speed and transparency you’re trying to create. Transparency is table stakes for cross-functional alignment and high-speed execution; if these are your intent then a system of record is essential.

This communication guide for change agents can help you get key stakeholders on board and build momentum.

The most important thing you can do as you drive this change forward is keep the “why” front and center! Avoid the acronyms and concentrate on the purpose of the change, the value of alignment, accountability and transparency for the organization and everyone in it. Few people know why they need to do OKRs; everyone knows why they need to align on objectives and the results their org is trying to achieve and be transparent about them.

“Before WorkBoard, our strategy lived in a secret room — great slides, but no clarity. We went from people guessing at priorities to every associate seeing how their work ladders up…"

Why Before How

OKRs are powerful drivers of peak enterprise performance, but can be a double edged sword if you're over-zealous.

Strategy is Lost in Translation

When driving adoption of OKRs as a strategy execution framework, you can avoid losing sight of your business strategy amidst jargon and indirection by making a few simple changes in how you communicate.

Avoiding Failure

What pitfalls do your organization's results management leaders face over the first year of the journey towards peak enterprise performance?

Three Ways OKRs Can Make You a Better Leader

The fastest way to improve as a leader is to get the foundations right. If you’re spinning trying to eke out 1% improvements, you’re probably missing the opportunity to transform your leadership and team’s performance. Here are 3 20-50% improvements you can make today.

Don’t Ask for Updates — Ask for Focus

Why asking for “KR updates” may be undermining your actual results.

Calibrate and Celebrate Weekly

Align on key results on Monday, then celebrate progress on Friday.

Quarterly OKR Retrospective and Reset

Introspection is the key to great OKRs and outcomes. See how smart teams use OKRs to celebrate, learn, and improve.

Lean into the Red

In OKRs, as in life, talking about the hard things is vital to achieving your goals.

As the saying goes Rome wasn’t built in a day, and you aren’t going to transform strategy execution in quarter or two! Set the right expectations for the transformative impact you will have over time; use your roadmap to communicate gains and learnings each quarter and to communicate the strategy execution improvements in the next stage of the journey. Each year as you refresh your strategy, refresh your strategy execution cadence and focal points to optimize achievement – both strategy and execution must be continuously adapted in a fast changing world.
